Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former vice president and 2024 presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has publicly apologized to party members for the NPP’s poor showing in the most recent general elections.
Dr. Bawumia admitted during a speech in London, UK, that the NPP made a number of mistakes that resulted in significant losses in important constituencies.
“The NPP did a lot of work, there’s no doubt about that, but we did not get everything right. We got quite a few things wrong, and I think that, on my own behalf and on behalf of the party, I apologise to all of you for us not getting the figures right,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia was upbeat about the future in spite of the setback, saying: “I believe that, by the grace of God, if we are given another opportunity, we will get many things right, because we have learnt the lessons that will guide us forward.”
A 12-member committee headed by former Speaker of Parliament Professor Mike Oquaye investigated the reasons for the party’s crushing loss in the 2024 elections and reported its conclusions to the party’s leadership.
The party has, however, refused to make the report’s contents public, claiming that it is not meant for general consumption.
During the elections, the NPP lost badly in both the parliamentary and presidential races.
