Residents in Asamankese in the West Akyem Municipality of the Eastern Region have started rejecting Taxi drivers who refuse to wear a nose mask while driving as part of measures to protect them from contracting COVID-19.
They have been also rejecting Taxi drivers who take more than three passengers at the Taxi station and Town running.
In an interview with Chairman of the Taxi drivers in Asamankese, Mr. Isaac Kwasi Marfo said although reducing the number of passengers affect their daily sales but all the drivers have been directed to abide by the government orders to reduce passengers to stop the spread of the deadly disease.
He lauded the move by passengers and called on them to also wear a nose mask before patronizing their services and vowed to arrest and punishes any Taxi driver who overload at this critical period.
In a related development; Secretary for the Asamankese branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, Mr. Bashir Abdul Karim said they are abiding by the government directives and have a reduced number of passengers with immediate effect.
He called on all Ghanaians to sacrifice at this critical period and assured that drivers and passengers who travel through Asamankese lorry station shall join the fight against the spread of COVID -19 by ensuring social distancing, washing hands before joining a vehicle and wearing nose mask.
