Fifty Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the Abuakwa North Municipality of the Eastern Region have received startup equipment aimed at helping them build sustainable livelihoods and achieve economic independence.
The items distributed through the Municipal Assembly’s Department of Social Welfare and Community Development and funded by the Disability Fund included chest freezers, industrial and manual sewing machines, ovens, popcorn makers, hair dryers, wax prints, groceries, palm fruits and oil, vegetable oil, maize, groundnuts, gari, and bags of charcoal.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at the New Tafo funeral grounds, Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Charles Darko Yeboah commended the Mahama-led administration for increasing the Disability Fund allocation from three to five percent of the Assembly Common Fund. He noted that the enhanced funding would expand the programme’s reach, enabling more PWDs to benefit in the coming years.
Hon. Darko Yeboah urged beneficiaries to use the items responsibly and for their intended purposes. He also called on unregistered PWDs to take the necessary steps to enrol, adding that ongoing community sensitisation campaigns would continue to educate residents on the registration process and encourage broader participation.

The MCE further appealed to the public to stop hiding relatives with disabilities, especially children. He advised that such children be enrolled in the OPASS special school, stressing that they have the potential to become future leaders if given proper care and attention.
In response, the beneficiaries expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Assembly and government for the continuous support, noting that the assistance would significantly improve their livelihoods and overall well-being.
