The District Accountability Tour, an initiative of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs aimed at promoting transparency, citizen participation and responsive local governance, has commenced in the Greater Accra Region.
The nationwide exercise provides a platform for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to engage directly with residents, highlight key interventions and account for their stewardship in line with government’s commitment to strengthening decentralisation and improving service delivery.
Leading the tour, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, underscored the importance of accountability and responsiveness in local governance while outlining measures being undertaken by government to enhance the efficiency and credibility of the local government system.
Among the updates shared during the engagements, the Minister announced that government has commenced the payment of end-of-service benefits to former Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), Coordinating Directors and other eligible officials who served under the previous administration, in fulfilment of obligations under Administrative Order No. 39.
He noted that the move reflects government’s commitment to fairness, continuity and the strengthening of Ghana’s decentralisation architecture.
The District Accountability Tour is expected to be rolled out across all regions, providing citizens with the opportunity to engage with duty bearers and contribute to discussions on local development priorities.
