The Ahafo Regional Security Council, led by the Regional Minister, Hon. Charity Gardiner, has intensified the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, with a major operation at Adagyamemu in the Tano North Municipality.
The operation led to the destruction of an illegal mining site and the seizure of five excavators allegedly being used for galamsey activities.
The operation follows reports of severe destruction to the River Tano caused by illegal mining activities in the area.
Leading the exercise, the Ahafo Regional Minister, Hon. Charity Gardiner, said the Regional Security Council acted swiftly to prevent further pollution and destruction of the river.
Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Hon. Collins Dauda, expressed concern over the increasing destruction of water bodies across the country due to galamsey activities.
He said the operation forms part of government’s efforts to protect the environment and preserve water resources for future generations.
The MP also urged the Regional Security Council to extend the crackdown to other affected water bodies within the area.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Tano North, Hon. Pious Opoku, commended the Regional Security Council for the successful operation.
He pledged the Assembly’s support in resourcing the Blue Water Guards to ensure regular monitoring of illegal mining activities within the municipality.
Meanwhile, the Ahafo Regional Police Commander, DCOP James Annor, assured the public of the Police Service’s commitment to supporting the fight against galamsey in the region.
He warned security personnel involved in illegal mining activities to desist immediately or face the full rigours of the law.
DCOP Annor added that additional reinforcement would be sought from Accra if necessary to sustain the anti-galamsey operations.
