Ghana legend Dan Owusu has criticized the performance of Black Stars players following the sacking of head coach Otto Addo, describing their output as nothing to write home about.
Otto Addo, who returned for a second stint with the West African football powerhouse, was relieved of his duties by the Ghana Football Association following a difficult run of results.
The decision to part ways with the former Talent Development coach of Borussia Dortmund stemmed from a back-to-back defeats to Austria and Germany in international friendly matches. Ghana succumbed to a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Austria in Vienna on Friday, followed by a 2-1 loss to Germany in Stuttgart on Monday evening.
In an interview with Koforidua-based Bryt FM, Owusu expressed concern about the timing of Addo’s sacking while also criticizing the players’ performances.
“For me, coaches are important in the game, but players also play a huge role in a team’s success. Conceding five goals against Austria is deeply worrying. We shouldn’t blame the Black Stars’ struggles solely on the coaches. Truth be told, the players’ performances have been nothing to write home about — they’ve been far from encouraging.
Otto Addo was preparing the team for the World Cup and has now been sacked. This means we must appoint a new coach who will have to race against time to understand our philosophy, monitor players, and put everything in place. It’s a worrying situation,” he said.
Addo oversaw 22 matches as Black Stars coach. During this period, Ghana recorded eight wins, five draws, and nine defeats, scoring 35 goals and conceding 28.
