Accra, July 15 – Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Tuesday, July 15, a leading politician expressed deep embarrassment and concern over the events surrounding the recent by-election in Ablekuma North, calling it a worrying setback for Ghana’s democratic development.
He stated, “I am deeply embarrassed as a politician and worried about the state of our democracy. Over the years, we have made monumental strides in improving how elections are conducted in this country. Unfortunately, what happened in this by-election shows that those gains are at risk.”
The Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi cited a lack of adequate security and growing political tensions as key contributors to the unrest. “There were many early signs of rising tension. Even the ordinary person in Ablekuma North knew there was friction between the parties. For example, a school was set on fire just last year due to political unrest. So, for law enforcement to assume this would be a calm, ordinary by-election was clearly a misjudgment.”
He revealed that 19 polling stations were flagged for serious security breaches. “Not all 19 had problems, but even one incident is too many. In an election with just 19 centers, for this kind of violence to happen is deeply troubling. I’m not happy about it at all.”
Turning to the opposition’s recent conduct, he said, “Given how the NDC behaved after the 2024 elections—especially after the NPP conceded—I’m not surprised. They’ve taken advantage of that moment of weakness. That’s why I said a couple of weeks ago that the NPP should never concede so quickly in the future.”
Dr. Adomako Kissi concluded by stressing that the warning signs were there long before election day. “There were early indicators of trouble, but they weren’t addressed. That unfortunately contributed to our loss of the seat in this by-election.”
