A Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Legon, Dr. Jerry Joe Ebow Kingsley Harrison, has raised concerns over the recent COVID-19 report released by the University of Ghana Health Services Directorate.
Speaking on Bryt Adekye Mu Nsem with host Kwamina Sam Biney on Bryt FM on Friday, June 27, 2025, Dr. Harrison advised the public not to panic over the reported rise in COVID-19 cases on campus. He explained that the purpose of the report was to raise awareness—not to incite fear—about the continued presence of the virus.
According to Dr. Harrison, the current situation is not as critical as during the peak of the pandemic. He stressed that while COVID-19 is no longer at pandemic levels, it remains important for the public to take personal precautions to prevent further spread.
“This is not a panic situation. We are only creating awareness so that people will know the virus still exists and take the necessary steps to protect themselves,” he said.
Dr. Harrison urged the public to resume adhering to basic health protocols such as regular hand washing, wearing face masks in crowded places, and maintaining personal hygiene. He emphasized that these measures are essential to avoid a potential resurgence of the virus.
He also revealed that the University has temporarily suspended all public gatherings on campus as a preventive measure to reduce the risk of transmission.
Dr. Harrison further advised individuals to seek medical attention promptly if they experience symptoms such as fever, coughing, or fatigue. He clarified that while these symptoms may be similar to COVID-19, they do not automatically confirm infection. Medical evaluation is necessary to determine the cause.
“We’re in a season where flu-like symptoms are common. But that doesn’t mean every illness is COVID-19. We’re encouraging people to seek medical care early, just to be sure and stay safe,” he added.
He concluded by encouraging Ghanaians to remain vigilant and health-conscious, reiterating that awareness and early action are key to preventing another wave of infections.
