The Ghana AIDS Commission has expressed deep concern over the growing rate of HIV infections among young people, particularly those aged 15 to 24.
According to recent data from the Commission, there is a troubling trend where many young individuals prioritize preventing pregnancy over protecting themselves from sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV.
Speaking on Tuesday, July 22, the Director-General of the Commission, Dr. Prosper Akanbong, attributed the surge in infections to the increasing reliance on emergency contraceptives rather than condoms.
“We are seeing high infection rates among young and adolescent groups. The 15 to 24 age group is experiencing a progressively rising trend in HIV cases, and that is very worrisome,” Dr. Akanbong stated.
He explained that many young people perceive pregnancy as a more immediate threat than HIV, leading to a surge in the use of emergency contraceptive pills, while the use of condoms—which offer protection against both pregnancy and STIs—remains low.
“They tend to fear pregnancy more than infections. So, you see increased use of emergency contraceptives, but not enough condom use,” he lamented.
Dr. Akanbong stressed the urgent need for intensified public education and awareness campaigns to promote safe sex practices and correct misconceptions about HIV transmission and prevention.
