The Ghana Education Service (GES) has strongly denounced the acts of violence and sexual abuse reported during the Super Zonal Sports Competition, which took place in the Eastern Region from February 4 to 6, 2026.
In a statement signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, on February 11, GES stated that it had received reports of “serious misconducts involving students,” including a stabbing incident and an alleged gang rape.
“Management condemns these acts in the strongest terms and emphasises that such behaviour has no place within the Ghana Education Service. Inter-school sports remain an important co-curricular activity aimed at nurturing talent, promoting discipline, teamwork, and unity among students.
“It is therefore unacceptable for such events, or activities connected to them, to be associated with violence, sexual abuse, or any form of criminal conduct,” the statement read.
A student from Koforidua Senior High Technical School was attacked approximately 200 meters from the competition site after departing to have lunch with a buddy, the statement said. According to GES, the victim was allegedly attacked by New Juaben Senior High School pupils.
Additionally, according to the Service, a female Osino Senior High School student was allegedly raped in a thicket a short distance from the competition grounds.
GES revealed that two students have been arrested in relation to the alleged rape and are being held by the police to aid in their investigations. Currently at large is a third suspect who was previously a student at Koforidua Senior High Technical School and is identified as the alleged ringleader.
“The victim has received medical attention and has since been discharged from the hospital. She is being provided with counselling and psychosocial support by the Regional Guidance and Counselling Coordinator, the Head of the Girls’ Education Unit, and officers of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU).”
