Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been installed as a Lay Canon of the St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral in the Diocese of Koforidua.
The installation ceremony was officiated by the Rt. Rev. Felix Odei Annancy, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Koforidua.
During the ceremony, the former President took the oath, pledging to serve the Church with all his heart and strength. He affirmed his belief in the doctrine and discipline of the Anglican Church, as upheld by the Church of the Province of West Africa and outlined in its Constitution.
“I promise to use the forms prescribed in the Book authorized by the Diocese of Koforidua, and none other, except as may be directed by lawful authority,” he stated.
The congregation offered prayers for His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, asking for divine grace and guidance through Jesus Christ. They also prayed that God, who has inspired him to undertake this responsibility, would grant him the strength and grace to faithfully fulfill his mandate.
His installation was marked by a historic and joyous celebration, attended by congregants, traditional authorities, parliamentarians, and former ministers of state.
The Role of a Lay Canon in the Anglican Communion
- A Lay Canon, like a Reverend Canon, is honoured for service and partnership.
- Lay Canons are recognized by the Diocese or Province for outstanding contributions in areas such as social justice, mission, and development projects.
- They bring their expertise and experience to support the work of the Church.
- They are members of the laity at the diocesan level who serve on the Diocesan Chapter.
- They help ensure gender balance and contribute skills needed within the Chapter, while also advising the Bishop on socio-economic and political matters.
- They assist in mobilizing resources to support the Diocese’s ministry.
- They may be assigned special responsibilities in areas such as health, evangelism, church planting, education, business, and hospitality.
- During Synod, they are seated behind the Clergy Chapter.
- They may assist in administering the Chalice when necessary.
- They are entitled to wear special vestments (copes or gowns).
