President John Dramani Mahama has announced that construction of the Afram Plains bridge will soon begin, marking a major step toward improving infrastructure in the area.
He made this known during a sod-cutting ceremony for a Farm Services Centre at Takoratwene in the Afram Plains South District of the Eastern Region.
The President explained that residents have recently faced significant transportation challenges due to faults with the pontoon ferry that serves the area. In a recent incident, the faulty pontoon broke down while carrying passengers, leaving many stranded on the river.
To address these challenges, the government plans to construct a 3.6-kilometre bridge over the Afram River, alongside about 100 kilometres of connecting roads.
The project is expected to drive economic growth, improve regional connectivity, and create new income opportunities, particularly in agriculture and related sectors.
The bridge forms part of the government’s broader infrastructure agenda aimed at increasing agricultural productivity, stimulating economic expansion, and reducing poverty. It is also a key component of the GH¢10 billion “Big Push” Programme, which focuses on delivering critical infrastructure such as roads, schools, and hospitals across the country.
