The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako Baidoo Esq., has criticised the Minority Caucus over its comments regarding Parliament’s approval of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly known as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.
According to the lawmaker, members of both the Majority and Minority caucuses were represented on Parliament’s Committee on Human Rights, and no significant changes were made to the contents of the bill during the recent review process.
He stated that the clauses and provisions contained in the current bill remain largely the same as those presented to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during the 8th Parliament.
Speaking on Bryt Adekyee Mu Nsem Morning Show, Mr. Baidoo explained that the bill, which is currently awaiting presidential assent, seeks to prohibit the promotion, advocacy, and sponsorship of LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana.
The Akwatia MP further blamed former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for failing to assent to the bill passed by the 8th Parliament. According to him, the former President missed an opportunity to be remembered for protecting what he described as Ghanaian family values.
Mr. Baidoo also urged Ghanaians to disregard comments made by the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, regarding the approval of the bill.
He expressed confidence that President John Dramani Mahama would assent to the bill should it be presented to him.
Parliament recently approved the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, a piece of legislation that has generated intense public debate both within Ghana and internationally. The bill now awaits presidential assent before it can become law.
