The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has begun relocating troops from El-Wak Barracks to the newly completed Butler Barracks at Burma Camp as part of a broader strategy to improve accommodation for military personnel and strengthen operational effectiveness.
The relocation exercise commenced in the early hours of Friday, 5 June 2026, involving the movement of troops, military vehicles, equipment and logistical support assets under tight security arrangements.
Military Police personnel were deployed throughout the operation to ensure a smooth, safe and orderly transition as personnel and resources were moved to the new facility.
Speaking during the exercise, the Chief of Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, Air Vice Marshal Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai, described the relocation as a key component of the military’s long-term development strategy.
According to him, the move is intended to improve living conditions for service personnel while enhancing force deployment and strengthening the overall operational capabilities of the Armed Forces.
The transfer follows several days of intensive sensitisation and engagement with personnel affected by the relocation to ensure a seamless transition.
Military authorities expect the exercise to be completed by the end of June, paving the way for the commencement of a new barracks redevelopment project at the El-Wak site.
The construction of Butler Barracks forms part of ongoing efforts by the Ghana Armed Forces to modernise military infrastructure and provide improved welfare facilities for personnel.
