Stakeholders in Ghana’s sanitation sector have renewed calls for sustainable financing and modern waste treatment infrastructure to address the growing waste disposal challenges confronting the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA).
Th call was made at a high-level Stakeholder Dialogue on Landfill and Waste Management held on Monday, June 8, 2026, at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, Accra, under the theme: “Alleviating Waste Disposal Crisis in Greater Accra.”
The dialogue brought together government officials, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), sanitation experts, development partners and private sector operators to deliberate on practical and sustainable solutions to safeguard environmental health and ensure cleaner communities.
Delivering the keynote address, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, underscored the urgent need for increased investment in engineered waste treatment facilities as rapid urbanisation and population growth continue to exert pressure on existing waste management infrastructure.
He stressed that sustainable financing remains critical to maintaining efficient sanitation services and safeguarding public health, while urging Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to prioritise sanitation management and strengthen collaboration with private service providers.
Participants at the dialogue advocated a transition from landfill-dependent waste disposal systems to integrated waste treatment approaches that emphasise recycling, composting and resource recovery, with landfills serving only as a last resort.
The engagement concluded with a renewed commitment by stakeholders to deepen collaboration and pursue innovative financing mechanisms aimed at sustaining sanitation gains and keeping Greater Accra clean, resilient and environmentally safe.
