Central Tongu District Health Services Directorate in the Volta Region has recorded a total of 169 teenage pregnancies from January to May 2020.
The Health Directorate is blaming the lack of parental control on the phenomenon.
This was disclosed by Madam Justine Sefakor Alornyo, Central Tongu District Director of Health Services at the forum for stakeholders on prevention/reduction of teenage pregnancy/child marriage, organized at Adidome in the Central Tongu District by the Department, with funding support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
She entreated health workers to respect the rights of teenagers to access family planning methods to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
Family planning was not to promote promiscuity among young ones but would help protect those sexually active who would ignore all counseling to indulge in sexual acts from ruining their lives and future, she added.
Volta region was placed third in the 2017 records of teenage pregnancy in the country and recorded a total of 10,041 teenage pregnancies in 2017 representing 14.6% with about 239 between the ages of 10-14 years.
Central Region has also recorded a total of three thousand one hundred and ninety-eight (3,198) teen pregnancies from January to May 2020.
According to the Ghana Health Service (GHS), drivers, farmers, and teachers continued to be the group of men who are impregnating the teens.
