The Kwahu Afram Plains South District Assembly in the Eastern Region is pushing for the establishment of more examination centers in the district to mitigate the yearly struggles Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) Candidates from remote villages go through.
The Kwahu Afram Plains South District has only one WAEC approved Examination center being St. Fidelis Senior High Technical School.
Maame Krobo Community Day Senior High School has temporarily been added by the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) after a request by the District Assembly last month as a measure to curb congestion amidst Coronavirus fears.
Speaking to mybrytfmomline.com, the District Chief Executive for Kwahu Afram Plains South, George Ofori admitted the current challenges students go through as a result of inadequate Examination centers in the District.
He however said, efforts are being made for West Africa Examination Center (WAEC) to increase the Examination Center in the district to five next year.
He said, WAEC recently approved a proposal by the District to have its own Examination Depot to keep the exam papers to prevent the challenges of traveling long distances for the papers.
The inadequate Examination centers in Kwahu Afram Plains South District are affected by BECE candidates in remote Island and Inland Communities who had to Commute as long as 30Km to the examination Center.
The practice over the years is that candidates leaving outside Tease Community relocate to sleep in shabby classrooms near the exams center until the exams are overdue to transportation challenges.
The inconvenience has not changed this year as hundreds of BECE candidates in the District are sleeping in very poor classrooms just to write the BECE.
Mybrytfmonline.com observed a sorry sight as the candidates were seen congested in classrooms with poor illumination and with no protection against mosquitoes. No water and no access to a toilet facility.
“We came here. On Sunday which is on 13th, September. We came from far to come and write our final exams because there is no center in our place we came to Tease to sleep in the classrooms we are 30 in number in a room. There is no water here we search for water in the town to bath, the school’s toilet has been locked up so we don’t have a place of convenience, lighting system here very poor so we are not happy.”
John Tsatsu Assembly Member for Fori Fori electoral area also a teacher voluntarily taking care of the candidates from his electoral area is worried calling on WAEC to create more Examination centers for the district.
