The Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area in the Eastern Region has imposed a two-week ban on drumming and noise-making as part of customs to usher in Adae Festival.
The ban takes effect from Tuesday, 20th December, 2022 evening at 6pm to 4th January, 2023.
According to a statement signed by Oberempong Gyamfi Sarfo Kyere II, Krotihene of Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area, “during the period of the ban, the usual form of worship should be confined to the premises of the church and the mosque. Churches and Mosques are expected to refrain from using loud musical instruments or organizing events that are likely to bring about noise making.”
However the youth of Akyem Oda in a press conference have threatened to defy the ban since the traditional council will not celebrate any festival after the ban is lifted as been the practice due to chieftaincy dispute.
The youth say the ban will affect various merry making activities including the popular youth festival held during Christmas.
Again, economic activities will be affected as pubs and various entertainment centers cannot operate.
The youth warned they are ready to “sacrifice their blood and strength to defend their rights to entertain themselves this christmas and new year seasons”.
However, the Krontihene in reaction to the press conference held Monday December 19, 2022 stated that “ We can’t do anything about the two weeks ban on noise making in Akyem Oda during this Christmas festivities. The youth have to respect Akyem Kotoku culture. They can still organize events after 4th January, 2023,” Oberempong Gyamfi Sarfo Kyere II, Krotihene of Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area said.
