Kwaku Agyeman- Manu, the Minister for Health has inaugurated a 13-Member Board of the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCNM) at the Ministry of Health ushering them into the next phase of their duties.
He disclosed in his remarks that in recent times many nurses and midwives have chosen legal routes to migrate abroad for better training and as such nothing can be done about it because of the conditions present in the country.
“We are working with the UK to get a bilateral agreement to start exporting nurses to the UK but we want to use that window to regulate to be able to know what it takes”, he said.
According to the Minister, the exercise has not been completed due to a large number of nurses and midwives.
He further expressed that the Ministry and the UK Government had struck a negotiation which entailed that all persons that go through the widow must pay £1,000 to the state.
He further stated that the Ministry of Health is collaborating with the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations to stabilize this type of exercise.
The Chairman of the Board, George Abankwah-Yeboah expressed his immense gratitude to the President and the Minister for giving them an opportunity to serve on the Board. He stated that the aim of the Board is to train more people to meet the needs of the President’s Agenda 111.
He said the bedrock of the sector is the nurses and midwives assured and the Minister that the Board Members will do all it takes to ensure that health services are good.
The other members of the Board include Madam Hannah Akua Oparebea Acquah, Dr. Abigail A. Kyei, Dr. Gloria Achempim-Ansong, Mrs. Susuana Van-Brocke, Dr. Baffour Awuah, Dr. Nancy Innocentia Enyan, Mrs. Philomena Nyarkoa Wooley, Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, Mrs. Netta Forson Ackon, Mrs. Patience Adumua-Lartey, Mr. Andrew Holyfield Tettey and Mr. Timothy Kwegyir Aggrey.
