Government has assured that nursing and teacher trainee allowance will not be cancelled under IMF conditionality.

Yaw Osafo -Maafo who made this known explained that the IMF program will not affect the allowance contrary to speculations.
He said the intervention is one of the pro-poor policies government strongly protected during negotiation with the IMF under the extended credit facility arrangement worth $3billion bailout secured in mid-may 2023 which $600 million already disbursed to the country.
Yaw Osafo Maafo said this when speaking on behalf of President Akufo Addo on Saturday July 1,2023 during 175th Anniversary and Prize Giving Day of the Presbyterian College of Education at Akropong-Akuapem in the Eastern region.
He said the introduction of teacher licensure exams aims at lifting the image of the teaching profession and avoiding the situation where unqualified persons infiltrate the profession and bring it into disrepute.
He expressed commitment of government to the teacher education and profession to ensure quality education.
The Moderator of Presbyterian Church of Ghana also the Chancellor of Presbyterian University, Ghana PUG Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mantey called on government to improve conditions of service of tutors at Colleges of Education to reflect upgrade of the institution to University status.
According to the Moderator, remuneration of teachers in Colleges of Education needs to be reviewed and repackage to befit the transformation from Diploma Awarding Institution to Degree Awarding Institution to encourage the lecturers to fully commit towards teaching and training of teachers.
The Moderator also urged government to facilitate the transformation of colleges of Education into a fully furnished teacher training universities and grant them charter.

The theme for the ceremony was “175 years of holistic education honouring our past , celebrating the present and shaping the future”.
The Principal of the College Rev. Nicholas Apreh Siaw mentioned some pressing challenges of the college such as inadequate staff accommodation, inadequate vehicles to support students to school and for fields experiences as well as encroachment on their lands.
Two educational complex blocks consisting of ICT labs, science labs , offices and dormitories were commissioned to commemorate the 175th anniversary.
