Hopeson Adorye, the main member of the United Party (UP), has suggested a temporary statewide suspension of mining operations, claiming that Ghana requires a structured reset to rehabilitate degraded lands and contaminated water bodies.
He recommended to the Mahama-led government that mining operations, both legal and illicit, be suspended for a full year so that authorities could recover the impacted areas before resuming the industry under more stringent regulations.
He said the following on JoyNews, “Let us ban mining for one complete year. If we see you mining, you are on your own. Within that period, let us reclaim our land.”
He said that such a delay would give authorities time to reevaluate license conditions and allow water systems to organically recover.
All operators should have to reapply for permits under stricter environmental requirements following the moratorium, he continued.
“Whether you have a licence or not, everybody should reapply. Then conditions will be checked properly before approval,” he explained.
