Minority leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has distanced himself from a widely shared social media post criticizing Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, claiming that the remarks were made after his account was hacked.
The message, which went viral on social media, made the argument that no Parliament in the “civilized world” should pass legislation that criminalizes people based on their sexual orientation or the people they choose to love since it does not safeguard society.
Afenyo-Markin has now denied writing the remark, though.
He claims that stuff that did not represent his opinions was published because his social media account was hacked.
The explanation was made after the post generated a lot of discussion on social media, with some users seeing it as a major shift from the stance often associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill passed by Parliament.
One of the most contentious pieces of legislation in Ghana is still the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
The bill was approved by Parliament, but due to continuous debates over procedural, constitutional, legislative, and human rights issues, it has not yet become law.
