Former Asante Kotoko player Godwin Ablordey has argued that players taking a pay cut amid coronavirus crisis shouldn’t be up for discussion in Ghana as he believes salaries of local-based players are meager.
Football activity in the country has been suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak.
With no football activities in the country, some football administrators have called on players to accept a pay cut in this difficult times to help relieve the clubs from their burden as their main source of income are gate proceeds.
Players of European heavyweights such as Juventus and Barcelona have led the way by cutting down their wages.
There is a divergent opinion from football connoisseurs on Ghanaian clubs taking the same steps in cutting their players pay to help clubs during the coronavirus outbreak.
But the former Asante Kotoko skipper has insisted that the decisions taking by top European clubs cannot be copied in Ghana.
“To think about the salary cut, you must also consider the wages of our players. We all want to help but we must also know that the players have families to take care off. We have to look at the salaries of the players before we discuss pay cut here”
“Let’s take Eleven Wonders as an example, you take it into consideration how much will the players earn there. The Europeans receive good salaries and if they accept pay cut so be it. I think it is difficult to apply or discuss in the country” he told Bryt FM in an interview.
