The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has praised MTN Ghana for what he described as three decades of transformational investment and partnership that has reshaped the country’s telecommunications and digital economy.
Speaking at the official launch of MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary, said MTN’s journey reflects how sustained investment, innovation and collaboration can drive national development.
According to him, MTN has evolved from a telecom operator into a major enabler of economic growth, digital inclusion and financial empowerment in Ghana. He highlighted the company’s expansion of network infrastructure, fibre deployment and the growth of Mobile Money services as key milestones that have transformed communication, business and access to financial services across the country.
Sam George noted that MTN’s recent commitment of a US$1 billion investment in nationwide network infrastructure demonstrates strong confidence in Ghana’s future at a time when many global investors are becoming cautious due to economic uncertainty.
The Minister also acknowledged the role of government and regulators in creating an enabling environment that encouraged competition, innovation and digitalization over the years. He emphasized that continued collaboration between government, regulators and industry players would be crucial as Ghana embraces emerging technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and the Internet of Things.
Despite the progress made, the Minister identified key challenges facing the sector, including affordable digital access, infrastructure resilience, cybersecurity, digital skills development and environmental sustainability. He called for collective efforts to address these concerns while positioning Ghana for inclusive digital growth.
In his address, MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett described the anniversary as “a Ghanaian story” built around connection, opportunity and hope rather than just technology infrastructure.
He recounted how ordinary Ghanaians have embraced MTN as part of their daily lives, sharing a story of a farmer who insisted that his use of MTN services gave him a stake in the company’s success.
Blewett traced MTN Ghana’s growth from the launch of GSM services in 1996 to the rise of Mobile Money in 2009, which he said revolutionized access to financial services and economic participation for millions of Ghanaians.
He also reflected on the company’s role during the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that MTN’s network became essential national infrastructure that helped keep businesses, schools and families connected during lockdowns and uncertainty.
Looking ahead, Blewett said MTN Ghana is preparing for the future by expanding fibre infrastructure, modernizing systems and investing in sustainable technologies to support Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.
This year’s anniversary celebration is themed: “30 Years of Progress, Powered by You.” Both speakers agreed that the next phase of Ghana’s development will depend heavily on digital innovation, youth empowerment and inclusive technology-driven growth.
