A Development Economist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. George Domfeh, has expressed concern over what he describes as the growing tendency of politicians to focus on short-term achievements instead of long-term national development.
According to Dr. Domfeh, many politicians are more interested in projects and decisions that will quickly earn them public praise and political recognition rather than implementing policies that will benefit the country in the future.
He explained that sustainable national development requires leaders to think beyond today’s political gains and focus on long-term planning that will improve the lives of future generations.
Speaking on Bryt FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem programme, Dr. Domfeh noted that several important state institutions, especially the Bank of Ghana, are increasingly becoming politicise
He stated that in the past, the central bank operated independently and focused mainly on enforcing financial laws and maintaining economic stability. However, he believes political influence is gradually affecting the institution’s operations.
“Everything about the Central Bank is becoming political,” he stressed, adding that such developments could negatively affect Ghana’s economic management and long-term growth.
Dr. Domfeh further called for stronger institutions that can operate independently without political interference. He urged national leaders to prioritise policies that will strengthen Ghana’s economy and ensure sustainable development for future generations.
