Former Ghana international Dan Quaye has cautioned that the Black Stars will face a tough challenge when they begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Panama.
Ghana, set for their fifth appearance at the global showpiece, will open their Group L campaign against Panama on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, in what is widely expected to be a decisive opening fixture.
Following that encounter, the Black Stars will face European giants England and 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia in a highly competitive group at the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
For Quaye, Ghana’s fortunes at the tournament will depend largely on the players’ mentality and fighting spirit, even as coach Carlos Queiroz works to fine-tune the squad ahead of a demanding campaign.
“Panama will not be easy opponents for Ghana. While we are aiming for a strong start to the tournament, they will also be desperate for victory. I believe that with a strong fighting spirit, the Black Stars can succeed against them,” he told Koforidua-based Swiit FM.
“Coach Carlos Queiroz is doing his best, but I think everything will ultimately depend on the players if we are to make an impact at this tournament.”
Ghana are still in search of their first knockout-stage qualification since their memorable run in 2010, when they reached the quarter-finals in South Africa — their best-ever World Cup performance.
The Black Stars have previously featured at the World Cup in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022, with hopes high that the 2026 edition could signal a major turning point for the team.
