The Australian High Commission in Ghana has commissioned a Community Health and Planning Services (CHPS) compound at Akramang, a farming community in Nsawam -Adoagyiri Municipality of the Eastern Region.
This was after the Landlord served notice not to renew rent of the facility as to be used as a CHPS compound.
The High Commission funded the project with Gh¢207,000 which was half the cost while the Member of Parliament for the Area Frank Annor Dompreh supported with 200 bags of cement. The Municipal Assembly also donated a Polytank.
The project was executed by the Ark Development Organisation, a non-governmental organization in health.
The facility has a maternity unit, cold chain room, consulting room, dispensary, Family Planning Unit, and an accommodation facility for the In-Charge.
In the short term, the facility will simultaneously serve as a COVID-19 Treatment and Isolation Centre for the Municipality.
Commissioning the Project, the Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, Andrews Barnes told Starr News the project funded under the Commission’s Direct Aid Program “will make a real tangible impact on the lives of women who are giving birth and to improve the health of the local communities. We looking forward to very good projects to do so we encourage people to put forth proposals.”
Mrs. Eunice Abuaku, speaking on behalf of the Municipal Health Directorate, said the modernized CHPS facility would provide services such as sexual and reproductive health, early infant diagnostic, expanded program on immunization, growth monitoring program, and disease surveillance and control.
She added that minor ailments could be treated, provide health education and counseling for healthy life classes and good nutrition, home visits, community mental health, school health services, and care for the aged.
The Chief Executive Director of Ark Development Organisation who doubles as Chairman of the Coalition of NGOs in Health-Eastern region, Emmanuel Kwarfo Mintah said, the Akramang Community and its surrounding areas are in air polluted environment due to activities of quarry companies, a health facility to take care of their health needs was nonnegotiable therefore the decision by the NGO to solicit financial and material supports to put up a permanent health facility to serve the communities with a population of about 3000 inhabitants.
