The Eastern Regional secretariat of the Opposition National Democratic Congress, NDC, says the government is wasting the best opportunities in keeping coronavirus disease at bay in the country as a result of its failure to conduct mass testing among public servants and the general public.
“The government is squandering its best chance of containing the virus’s spread. The Akufo-Addo government remains largely visually impaired to scale off looming danger to public health as community spread of the disease lingers on” a statement issued Sunday, May 31, 2020, by the Regional Communication Officer of the NDC, Dallas Williams stated.
The statement was provoked by the death of a 55-year-old Chief Inspector who was the Station officer at the Central Police station in Koforidua reportedly died from coronavirus Friday, May 29, 2020, at the Eastern Regional Hospital.
According to the NDC “It is evident the Police Officer by virtue of his work, being the Station Officer might have come into contact with a number of police officers and the general public. Since the Police are less able to socially distance themselves during their work.
We, therefore, attribute the cause of his death to the failure by the Nana Akufo-Addo government to institute large scale testing in all government institutions and the general public. A call which has been echoed by the NDC and health experts across the country”
The NDC has therefore recommended to the government to “Institute measures to disinfect all police stations in the regional capital. Close down the police training school in the regional capital (Koforidua) as earlier suggested. Start mass testing in the region to enable the containment of the disease and the prohibition of mass activities (NIA, E.C. Registration) in the region to avoid a possible spread of the disease since the police and other security officers play a critical role in these activities”
The statement concluded that “drawing from the above, it is clear to even the uninitiated mind, that the ban on public gathering must not be lifted if really the public health is the priority of the Akufo-Addo government.”
