Former Hearts of Oak winger Patrick Razak has recommended a minimum salary of GHC2000 for players in the Ghana Premier League.
Most Ghanaian clubs struggle to meet the minimum wages for players leading to player exodus season after season.
In the latest report released by CEIS, Ghana is the second exporter of footballers (311 players) in Africa which gives credence to players moving out for greener pastures due to low wages.
Razak, who recently had a stint with Guinean top side Horoya AC attributed player exodus to money, saying local players receive meagre salaries from clubs.
In an interview with Sylvester Ntim ‘Koke’ of Bryt FM in Koforidua, he indicated that a good salary structure will ensure the retention of quality players in the Ghana League and hence raise the profile of the League and the teams.
According to him, Ghana Premier League clubs have struggled to make a meaningful impact with their compatriots on the African continent in the CAF inter-club competitions because of the player exodus.
However, the former Tamale Utrecht academy winger has suggested that a wage policy for local players will help save the situation.
“I think there should be a wage policy for the players. Monthly salaries of players should be between GHC1000 to GHC3000 dependent on the performance of the player”
“For me the maximum salary for local players should GHC3000. Even if both matured and youth players take GHC2000 I don’t think players will be desperate to travel for greener pastures”
“We all know the difficulties clubs find themselves in with regards to finances but they should also think about the players and maintain their topnotch players” he added.
