The Electoral Commission’s mop-up registration exercise in New Juaben South Municipality on Saturday and Sunday saw the registration of many minors and non-residents.
The situation caused intermittent confrontations and in some cases clashes between the ruling New Patriotic Party and the opposition National Democratic Congress.
Dozens of minors and non-residents were transported to the registration center allegedly by the NPP to register in their quest to secure at least 94,000 registrants in the Constituency.
The children below age 18 were visibly seen walking in groups with the same nose masks to the registration center to register at the SSNIT car Park area.
An attempt by the NDC agents to resist them from registering led to a confrontation in which an NDC agent was assaulted Sunday by two men believe to be NPP supporters. The NDC agent also dashed to his car to draw cutlass in an attempt to hack the two men.
The Swift intervention of armed Police personnel helped to avert the bloody clash.
The three were arrested and detained at the Eastern Regional Police Headquarters. Armed Police officers since took over the registration center as many supporters of the NPP trooped.
The NDC says they have challenged all minors and persons believe to be non-residents registered adding that it has evidence to argue their cases to disqualify the registrants.
The Electoral Commission (EC) institutes the two-day mop-up registration exercise for eligible Ghanaians who couldn’t register in the one-month long mass registration of voters which ended on August 6, 2020.
The mop-up exercise began Saturday, August 8, and ended Sunday, August 9 by 6:00pm.
