The Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman Thomas Ampem Nyarko has voiced skepticism over Pius Enam Hadzide’s win in the just ended parliamentary primaries of the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) suggesting financial influence played a significant role.
Thomas Ampem Nyarko emphatically stated that the Asuogyaman seat is not for sale.
Commending the NPP for a peaceful election in the constituency, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, asserted that the 2020 elections demonstrated the Asuogyaman electorate’s resistance to political opulence.
“I am telling Pius that 2020 we saw what happened in Asuogyaman. You can buy your primaries but cannot buy the people of Asuogyaman. Asuogyaman seat is not for sale,”
Thomas Ampem Nyarko said this when speaking at Apostles Revelation Society.
The Asuogyaman MP urged Pius Hadzide to provide an account of his achievements for the constituency during almost eight years in power.
Ampem Nyarko raised concerns about the lack of developmental efforts, both in Hadzide’s current role as CEO of the National Youth Authority and his previous positions.
“Pius has been deputy minister for youth and sports, deputy minister for information, and currently CEO. His party is in government, so if he has anything good for Asuogyaman, he would have done it long ago,” Nyarko stated.
Expressing confidence in the NDC’s future prospects, Nyarko declared, “In 2024, President John Mahama will win the election and return the NDC to power, and I will retain the seat for you as your member of parliament. You are going to see a lot more development in Asuogyaman.”
The exchange highlights the ongoing political dynamics in the Asuogyaman constituency, setting the stage for a spirited contest in the upcoming elections.
Hon.Thomas Ampem Nyarko made history in 2020 when he became the first MP in Asuogyaman to be re-elected consecutively having defeated the NPP candidate, Paul Ansah.
He polled 24,439 votes to beat his main contender, Mr Paul Asare Ansah of the New Patriotic Party, a former Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Habours Authority (GHAPOHA), who also bagged 23,201 votes in the tight contest.
