Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu in the Volta Region, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has described the government’s approach in fighting the deadly COVID-19 as misleading as this is not the time for great funfair and concerts.
The MP was reacting to the launching of Ghana COVID-19 tracker by the government on Monday 13th April 2020, which was telecast live on many media platforms across the country.
According to the outspoken legislator, the Government could have announced the existence of a COVID-19 tracker app when all is done and the app is readily available at one of its numerous Ministry of Information press briefings or presidential broadcasts which attract an even bigger audience.
He insisted it is an affront to our traditions, customs, and sensibilities to be organizing concerts, particularly in this period when there’s a surge in anxiety because our COVID-19 case count has spiked with more deaths being recorded and many more battling for their lives.
Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa, therefore, Government challenged the government to consider increasing funding for the scientists at Noguchi, WACCBIP, KCCR and also consider urgently recruiting the Coalition of Graduate Unemployed Allied Health Professionals who remain at home.
“I bet the international community would be wondering if the Ghana Government just found a vaccine for COVID-19” he added.
The Tracker, developed by the Ministries of Communication and Health, would also aid health authorities to identify high-risk communities and prioritize contact tracing and testing to prevent further spread of the virus.
