The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not permit National Democratic Congress (NDC) members to cause chaos or disturb the peace in Ghana, according to Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, October 22, Afenyo-Markin clarified that the NPP MPs’ decision to withdraw to their offices on that day was a calculated action to prevent conflict and mayhem following a disagreement in Parliament over who should hold the Majority side of the Chamber.
After their NDC colleagues decided to take the majority side of Parliament, NPP MPs left the Parliamentary Chamber earlier that day.
The NPP challenged Speaker Alban Bagbin’s October 17 order to declare four parliamentary seats empty in the Supreme Court, which issued a stay of execution, which caused the tension.
Afenyo-Markin charged during his news conference that the NDC was trying to incite the NPP to a physical altercation in an attempt to undermine the nation’s peace.
“We won’t give them [NDC] the opportunity to be lawless or disturb the peace of Ghana. Our decision to retreat was to prevent any form of chaos that they were trying to incite,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
Before taking any further action, the Majority Leader stressed that the NPP would continue to behave properly and wait for an order from Speaker of the House of Representatives Alban Bagbin.
“NPP, our tradition is a law-abiding tradition. Our forebearers have been peaceful. The country is hereby informed that we will not give them [the NDC] that lawlessness platform that they seek.
“We know innocent Ghanaians are going about their business, innocent Ghanaians in academia, we care about them. We understand that there is politics but we will do it in a civil manner.
“NPP is a peaceful party. We will not allow anybody to disturb the peace of this country.”
