Lydia Seyram Alhassan, Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, has defended her actions following the release of a video showing her and her constituency women’s organizer offering food to voters during the Special Voting exercise on Monday, December 2, 2024.
The MP was observed giving food packages to people in the voting line during the incident, which took place at the Legon Police Station polling station and provoked public discussion on voter influence and political ethics.
Lydia Alhassan denied accusations of malevolent intent in an interview with Bernard Avle on Citi FM’s Breakfast Show on Tuesday, December 3, saying that her acts were motivated solely by compassion.
She clarified that the incident started when a staff member in line asked for water. The water was supplied by her women’s organizer, and the MP gave the gesture to everyone who seemed hungry or exhausted after noticing others in need.
“I thought that there were some people who would need food after I have served my people, and so I decided to give it [the food] to them [the people in queue]. Did you see me giving out food to the people in the queue? The lady with me received a request for water, and in her attempt to give it to the person who requested it, she ended up giving it to two other people who also needed water.” She said.
