Ranking Member on Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr. Afriyie Ayew, has accused the government of acting in bad faith regarding its dealings with the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA). The dispute centers around the government’s delay in implementing the nurses’ conditions of service, which was agreed upon in May 2024.
The current government wants to postpone implementing the nurses’ conditions of service until 2026, citing budgetary constraints. However, GRNMA has rejected this proposal.
Dr. Afriye criticized the Ministry of Finance for not meeting with the nurses for six months, despite their willingness to engage.
Adding that, this condition of service by GRNMA can be consider in the Mid- Year budget review
Dr. Afriye also faulted the National Labour Commission (NLC) for resorting to court action instead of facilitating dialogue.
Moreover , GRNMA insists that it will not renegotiate the already agreed-upon terms and is only seeking implementation.
The ongoing strike has significantly disrupted healthcare services across the country.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has urged the nurses to return to the negotiation table, but GRNMA has dismissed this call, stating that they are willing to engage only on a clear roadmap for execution.
