A delegation from the World Health Organization (WHO), led by its Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Mohamed Yakub Janabi, has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Health, Hon Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, ahead of the upcoming African Health Workforce Investment Forum in Accra.
Welcoming the delegation, the Minister described the visit as timely, noting Ghana’s readiness to host the high-level forum.
He reinforced that beyond deliberations, the focus must be on implementing agreed actions to deliver tangible benefits to citizens.
Hon. Akandoh also highlighted ongoing reforms in the health sector, including the rollout of the Free Primary Healthcare Initiative, expansion of infrastructure, and efforts to recruit and retain health professionals.
Dr. Janabi commended Ghana’s leadership in advancing health sector reforms and underscored the growing importance of health workers as strategic national assets.
He raised concerns about the continued migration of African-trained professionals, stressing the need for structured and mutually beneficial arrangements between source and destination countries.
The Regional Director also proposed stronger partnerships, including investment support from countries that benefit from Africa’s trained workforce, to sustain training and improve retention.
The meeting also highlighted Ghana’s role as a regional leader, with several African countries learning from its experiences in health workforce planning and the National Health Insurance Scheme.
