The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on November 29, 2025, released the provisional results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), with thousands of candidates sanctioned for various examination malpractices.
According to WAEC, the subject results of 6,295 candidates were cancelled after they were found to have taken foreign materials—such as prepared notes, textbooks and printed materials—into examination halls. In addition, the entire results of 653 candidates were cancelled for possessing mobile phones during the examination.
WAEC further disclosed that the subject results of 908 candidates and the entire results of 158 candidates have been withheld pending investigations into suspected offences.
At a hearing organised by WAEC in Koforidua for affected candidates from various Schools in the Eastern Region, the Council explained that some Integrated Science results were withheld due to unusual similarities in candidates’ answers, which raised suspicions of collusion.
However, the decision sparked outrage among some parents, who accused WAEC of acting unfairly.
They argued that the sanctions have caused severe emotional distress to both candidates and their families, especially as some of the affected students reportedly obtained excellent grades that qualify them for university admission.
The withholding of their Integrated Science results has consequently left their admissions prospects uncertain.
The aggrieved parents also questioned why students are being punished while external invigilators and police officers assigned to the examination centres are not held accountable, particularly in cases where WAEC suspects organised malpractice or collusion.
They have therefore called on the examination body to review the affected cases and ensure that sanctions are applied fairly and comprehensively.
