The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces and the Forestry Commission, has launched a nationwide land reclamation initiative aimed at restoring degraded lands caused by mining and other human activities.
The project will commence with the restoration of 50 hectares of land within the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, marking the first phase of a broader environmental recovery programme.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi Esq., reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to environmental sustainability through its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) mandate as well as its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes.
He emphasized that environmental restoration remains a key priority for GoldBod as the organization works to ensure that economic activities, particularly in the mining sector, are conducted responsibly and sustainably.
Deputy Minister for Defence, Hon. Ernest Brogya Genfi, underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in reclaiming degraded lands and safeguarding the country’s natural resources. He noted that the Ghana Armed Forces are committed to supporting initiatives that promote environmental protection and sustainable development.
Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Dr. Hugh Brown, also highlighted the urgent need to restore damaged forest reserves and preserve Ghana’s biodiversity for future generations.
The partnership is expected to contribute significantly to the rehabilitation of degraded landscapes, strengthen environmental conservation efforts, and support the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s forest ecosystems.
