Residents and concerned citizens of Awukugua in the Okere District of the Eastern Region have announced the suspension of payment of all taxes to the District Assembly and other government institutions, effective Monday, September 7, 2026.
The residents say the decision is in protest against what they describe as the prolonged neglect and deteriorating condition of the Awukugua United Junior High School.
They have also warned that no government official will be permitted to enter the community until urgent steps are taken to address the challenges confronting the school.
According to the group, the school has been left in a deplorable condition, with some classrooms roofless and dilapidated, inadequate furniture and substandard sanitation facilities.
They contend that the situation is putting the safety and health of pupils at risk while negatively affecting teaching and learning and creating difficult working conditions for teachers.
The residents say several appeals, petitions and engagements with relevant authorities have failed to produce the needed intervention, describing the government’s response as inaction and broken promises.
They insist that education is a fundamental right and that children in Awukugua deserve a safe and decent environment in which to learn.
As part of measures to press home their demands, the community has announced plans for a massive demonstration on Friday, September 18, 2026.
The demonstration is expected to bring together community elders, youth groups, parents, residents and schoolchildren to demand immediate government intervention to rehabilitate the school.
Convenor of the Concerned Citizens of Awukugua-Okere, Kwaku Dawuro, said the community would no longer remain silent while the future of its children was being compromised.
The residents are therefore calling on the government and relevant authorities to urgently intervene and restore the school to an acceptable standard.
