The Eastern Regional branch of the Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives Ghana (UPNMG) has held its conference under the theme “Transforming Nursing Care in Ghana: Addressing Challenges and Enhancing Outcomes.”
Speaking at the event, Frank Kwabena Agyie, Eastern Regional President of UPNMG, explained that unlike previous union meetings which often focus on financial concerns or demands from government, this year’s conference was centered on improving healthcare delivery.
He noted that the gathering aimed to identify practical ways nurses and midwives can contribute to strengthening healthcare services across the region. According to him, discussions covered both hospital-based care and services provided by public health nurses, including home care for patients.
Mr. Agyie emphasized that participants were also addressing challenges that hinder nurses from performing effectively. He said the goal is to find lasting solutions that will enable healthcare professionals to deliver quality care, adding that improved service will ensure patients receive the attention they need when they fall ill.
Also speaking at the conference, Dr Damien Punguyire, Eastern Regional Director of Health Services, stated that the theme aligns with the priorities of the Ghana Health Service.
He indicated that discussions focused on key issues affecting healthcare delivery, including staff behaviour, patient satisfaction, quality of care, and legal concerns within the health system. Dr. Punguyire commended the leadership of the union for organizing a meeting that prioritizes service improvement rather than demands.
He further noted that while nurses and midwives are performing well, challenges with communication between health workers and patients sometimes affect service delivery. He expressed confidence that the outcomes of the conference would help improve communication skills, attitudes, and overall professionalism among nurses.
Dr. Punguyire added that with these improvements, healthcare delivery in the region is expected to see significant progress.
