Former National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ngleshie Amanfrom, Alexander Ackuaku has called for the arrest of chiefs who illegally sell lands on waterways and Ramsar sites, pressing that holding them responsible is necessary to reviewing Ghana’s recurring flooding.
Speaking in an interview, Mr. Ackuaku mentioned that authorities must be aggressive on attempting the main causes of flooding other than depending on urgent hints after misfortunes occur.
“We need to go back to the root causes of the flooding and make sure we uproot them to prevent future occurrences,” he stated.
Attesting to him, unsolid enforcement of environmental and structuring laws has urged illegal improvement in flood-prone areas.
“A greater cause of flood is human attitudes. We do not want to enforce the laws in this country, so people do whatever they like,” he noted.
Mr. Ackuaku argued that traditional leaders who sell lands knowing well that it is recognized as waterways or Ramsar areas should face the law accordingly.
“Chiefs who sell lands at illegal sites should be arrested. If this is done, they will stop, and the government will not have to spend money demolishing buildings,” he added.
He mentioned that disciplining persons connected in illegal land transactions will help guard environment and decrease the country’s flood hazards.
