The Eastern Regional Directorate of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service, has launched the Free Primary Healthcare Initiative in the Eastern Region to expand access to quality healthcare services across municipalities.
Speaking at the launch held at Suhum Kraboa Coaltar, the Eastern Regional Director of NHIA, Mr. Frank Addo, described the initiative as a significant milestone in Ghana’s healthcare delivery system.
According to him, the program is aimed at strengthening primary healthcare systems and advancing the country’s quest towards achieving universal health coverage.
Mr. Addo urged residents of Suhum to renew their National Health Insurance subscriptions regularly and visit health facilities to benefit from the program. He explained that the initiative seeks to eliminate financial barriers at the entry level of healthcare delivery, particularly for people in underserved communities, to enable them access essential medical services without financial constraints.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Suhum Municipality, Hon. Lydia Sara Ohenewa, reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery across the country. She noted that the health and well-being of Ghanaians remain a top priority for the government.

Hon. Ohenewa further stated that the initiative demonstrates government’s dedication to building a resilient and inclusive healthcare system anchored on equity, accessibility, and sustainability.
Meanwhile, the NHIA District Manager for Suhum Kraboa Coaltar, Mr. Triku Phillip Kwasi, disclosed that the free NHIS registration exercise under the initiative would help improve healthcare delivery in the area. He revealed that registration teams would visit churches and various organizations to register more residents onto the scheme.
He stressed that the Free Primary Healthcare Initiative is a long-term intervention designed to improve access to healthcare services for all citizens.
